DH Certificate Curriculum
Required Courses
Although students can take DH courses in any order, it is recommended that students enroll in the Practicum in their first spring semester, and in the Introduction in the following fall.
DH 8991: A graduate-level introduction to the history, theory, and methods of the digital humanities. Students will gain an understanding of the origins of DH, the kinds of work done under that label, the opportunities to participate in DH research at UVa, the research insights offered by DH methods, and the applicability of those methods to the student's own research interests
DH 8000: The DH Certificate Practicum provides principles for working with humanities materials as data while maintaining a commitment to humanistic inquiry. Students will learn to integrate digital humanities methods into coursework and research required in their home departments. This course provides students with a broad understanding of basic technologies and approaches used by digital humanists and introduces data standards and data modeling. It also provides an opportunity for students to begin work on the portfolio that students must submit for approval before receiving the DH Certificate.
Electives
Students must complete two courses from among the following categories.
Official DH Electives have a significant digital humanities component built into the syllabus. Coursework could include DH readings, application of DH methods and tools, and/or the employment of critical modes of inquiry around topics of technology and society.
Customized DH Electives are courses for which the instructor will accept DH work in lieu of a portion of their standard assignments. The Program Director provides support to both instructor and student in order to ensure that expectations for DH work are clear. If the instructor does not want to evaluate the more technical aspects of the student’s DH work, members of the DH Certificate Faculty Advisory Committee will take on that responsibility.
Independent Studies in DH require students to create a DH syllabus and meet regularly with an instructor throughout a semester. This elective can be a good fit for a doctoral student who wishes to write a DH article or dissertation chapter; it can also work well for an MA or PhD student who wishes to explore a particular branch of the digital humanities more generally.
