The program is open to any enrolled graduate student at UVA. 

• Students in master’s and doctoral programs are welcome.
• While students are encouraged to apply during their first semester of graduate school, under some circumstances students at a later stage in their studies may be considered for admission. 
• In advance of matriculation, students who have been accepted into a graduate program at UVA may consult with Rennie Mapp, Director of the DH Certificate Program (at mapp@virginia.edu), and may apply during the first month of their enrollment.  

Students may complete the requirements in any order.  The suggested DH Certificate curriculum begins with either of the two required courses (the DH Practicum, taught in the spring, or the Intro to DH, taught in the fall).  

The program's elastic structure enables students to work with their academic advisors and the director of the DH Certificate Program in order to fit DH coursework around departmental requirements.  A DH elective may count both toward departmental requirements and toward certificate requirements.

DH Certificate students bring a wide range of technical expertise to their work, and no technical background is expected.
